Athletic trainer...skip review and buy. Regular person.....read on
By M. Emerson
I remember the glory days of high school athletics 88-92. I remember getting up early to lift before school, cutting weight for wrestling, jogging, and baseball practice in the mornings because it would get so hot the rest of the day. All these sports that a proper core conditioning routine could of helped performance. What was the ab "routine" we did for all of those sports? Sit ups. That's it. Wait, I forgot twisting sit ups. Aside from wrestling where we did more exercises that indirectly worked the core sit ups was all.
Then after high school I started to work out more bodybuilding style to get bigger. Subscribed to the muscle magazines that always included a new workout, sometimes for abs. Hanging leg raises, sit ups, cable crunches were most of them. Same for power-lifting routines. Ahh the good old days, so simple, so basic.
This is a book I wish the coaches had it when they made our routines. Notice I didnt say that I wish I personally had it it will come up later.
This is a book for the instructor, the trainer, the coach, basically those that are paid for their knowledge. To me this was more textbook than a guide. It describes every core muscle in detail and it seemed more like a lesson in anatomy. Then a ton of exercises that unless you are an athlete you couldn't hope to do. Unless you train in a state of the art gym some of the exercises require equipment that no individual will just happen to own. A lot of them might require someone to teach you how to do them properly to get the benefits or even prevent injury. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of exercises you could do with no equipment and make a routine. But could a non-professional use the information and hope to form a routine specific to their needs......for the majority Id say no. Could a kinesiologist? Yes.
I'm not rating the book poorly because it doesn't claim to be a "core training for dummies" book. Maybe its my fault for choosing to review a book that is over my head. I just want to make it clear that this is a book that would look right on a trainers bookcase and might end up collecting dust on most other bookcases.

Best book I've seen on building your core and abs
By James Duckett
First of all, the publishers did not hold back on spending money on the graphics for this book. Everything is so bright and vibrant, not just on the cover, but throughout the book.
The book starts off with why you should do core exercises, explains in a lot more details than I ever knew about the core on what makes it up and what exercises need to be done to achieve them, and then the rest of the book is dedicated to several core-building exercises--complete with beautiful pictures to follow. I've tried finding websites like this, sites that show a number of core exercises, but I've always wanted good examples. I just could never find such a site, and websites don't usually have to worry about how much color goes into a graphic.
Very well done, and well demonstrated! And thorough, they spend over 20 pages just showing how to do a plank and its variations. A PLANK!!!!
This is all followed up with several workout programs that can be customized to your body and goals. Normally I include core workout with my lower-body exercises, but with this I think I need to have a day dedicated to core exercise alone. Either that, or make upper and lower body workout the secondary part of my workouts instead of my primary.

Recommended for trainers, coaches, and athletes
By Mr. and Mrs. Buddy Lee
This book was more in-depth than what I was looking for. I would say the audience for this well-researched book is professional-level and serious amateur athletes. And it would be perfect for coaches and trainers. The scholarship and breadth of information here approaches text book level. I was more interested in a few basic exercises to keep my core strong, but this book is really for the professionals.
