William M. Peña, FAIA, a retired partner of Caudill Rowlett Scott, is often referred to as the "father" of architectural programming, having spent more than fifty years developing, refining, and explaining the programming process.

For more than just architects that build buildings

I used this book to create a process to review the architecture of software systems. All software architects should read this book to get a better understanding of how to "get" requirements from their clients. The process of using "snow cards" (analysis cards) is a great communication tool that I have used to both get requirements and to provide feedback to projects that we were reviewing.
One section I always refer software architects to is the "cost estimation" section. If you are creating a building, you have to come in very close to your estimated cost if you want to stay in business. Compare this to the estimation of how much a software project will cost because we do not have a good estimation process. I always liked the estimate that you can park 125 cars per acre when you are trying to estimate how big a parking garage should be. We need to develop similar guidelines/estimates for software projects.
We were fortunate enough to have spent time with William Pena because he was very interested in how we had applied the techniques in his book to the development of software architectures.

Absolute must for minimally competent architects to define their customers needs!

Again....newer version of an older book, just keeps getting better, and more and more relevant everyday! It's a lost art, architects who can develop architectural programs! An absolute must for the genius student architects, or the interns, and even those licensed to be "minimally competent in the practice of architecture". (No I'm not being mean, that is actually what it says when you pass your architectural state boards). Now, someone turn the next version into a helpful app!

Lots of great information, gets a little wordy and long at times

I purchased this book because it was recommended reading for one of the seven architectural exams I need to pass to become an architect. The book is very well written and is full of information that I didn't need on the test, but I will definitely use in my career. In the middle of the book it becomes a little long winded and wordy, but the information the book provides is invaluable. I recommend it highly!
