Questions assumptions about our modern but hectic lifestyles

Just finished reading "New Slow City", and enjoyed seeing how the author began to re-frame for himself, the possibilities for a joyful, fulfilling, and abundant lifestyle in the midst of a bustling, gritty and sometimes impersonal place like NYC. Even though I differ in time, space and background, I was still struck by some of the similarities of our experiences:

>> The feeling of isolation one can have when you go against the flow of what is defined as "normal".
>> His practice of “living at the third story” (I call it “looking up” when I go for my daily lunch-time walks in mid-town Manhattan)
>> The discovery and use of "urban sanctuaries" that create little pockets of delight and opportunities for "escape"
>> The growing belief in the absurdity of the hectic pace at which we live and its corresponding social, physical and mental costs

Some may feel a bit frustrated that by the end of the book, no universal prescriptions are offered or that the application of the insights gleaned and shared are limited in who can realistically pursue them, given the restrictions imposed by certain firmly entrenched societal structures. However, as the saying goes, Rome wasn't built in a day so changing or deconstructing it, won't happen overnight either. But what I believe anyone can take away from this book is that we can and should examine existing assumptions, and then seek alternatives to replace them with. For these reasons I would recommend this book to anyone who finds themselves at a crossroads and is trying to discover how/where/what they can do differently to create a life that is uniquely meaningful and joyful to them.

the smells and the sounds of this fine world. This obvious

Take a moment to appreciate the tastes, the sights, the smells and the sounds of this fine world. This obvious, but often ignored sentiment is important everywhere and not just in NYC. But man, as someone that lives in the city, I know plenty of people who can afford to hear this reminder again. Re-learning these ethics in the context of NYC felt practical and really inspiring. It also made me think back to the recent Climate March. And it made me think how many people should have or would have held up 'live slow!' sings (hopefully something more clever than that) if they had read this book. Living slow is living sustainability (in the full sense of the word).

An engaging memoir inspiring us all to find slower, more mindful, and joy-full filled lives.

Before reading New Slow City (NSC) I was a somewhat typical twenty something University student: overscheduled, perpetually busy, compromising my own physical and emotional well being, and nearing exhaustion. At only twenty. I first came to NSC during one of the “busiest” times of my life, while living in one of Latin America’s largest metropolises -- La Paz, Bolivia. NSC armed me with the courage to find mindfulness amidst the buzzing, urban pulse; the hope to believe that there is another way outside of hyper-consumerist, hyper-distractive, hyper-paced, over scheduled dominant culture; and some practical strategies to create for my own self a slower, more joy-full, and health-full life within La Paz.

Now back in the United States, I hope to carry with me the lessons learned from NSC into my own hometown and University to inspire a new, or actually old, way of being that revalorizes human-to-human connection, simplicity, mindfulness, thrift, and the “vernacular cultures” of my own grandparents, great-grandparents and even great great-grandparents.

NSC is a truly engaging, heart and mind opening, page turning read. Appropriate for all ages wanting to find an alternative way of being. A wonderful “sequel” to Twelve by Twelve: A One Room Cabin Off the Grid and Beyond the American Dream. Remarkably inspiring, leaving me, and many of my friends and colleagues, questioning our own lives and wanting to create for ourselves more meaningful, slower paced, simpler, and joy-full lives.

Thank you Bill for sharing such intimate details of your and Melissa’s own journey in finding simplicity in the world’s largest city. You have (and continually are!) inspiring and educating many.

Definitely lacking, but OK for traditional mortgage products

I have to say that Fabozzi has the formula down pat--he gets "guest writers" to contribute various chapters to this book and does very little writing himself. The result is a disjointed, sometimes repetitious, other times incomplete volume. This book focuses extensively on agency mortgages--Ginnies, Fannies, Freddies--and speaks only a bit to the Alt-A, subprime and more exotic privately-originated mortgage markets. To call this book comprehensive would be a lie. Although this book was highly recommended to me by a PM at a traditional long-only manager, I can only guess that previous versions were better, because this one was certainly a high-priced primer that still left many areas of the market uncovered. Areas that are glaringly missing (beyond non-agency topics) include the role of hedge funds, loss mitigation/foreclosure processes, more info on EPDs, and the erosion of lending standards/rise of the subprime market. I think that a chapter on common mortgage origination fraud issues is also merited.

This book is good for the basics, on agencies. Beyond that, it may leave you scratching your head and wondering, "And...." because there is a palpable sense of incompletion. Borrow this book from someone else that already has it--don't buy it!

useful book but...

Fabozzi's MBS handbook is quite useful, but it's not what I'm here to review: For some reason it is absurdly expensive on amazon. If you go to abebooks or half or one of the other online vendors you can easily find copies for under $5. No need to spend $40+ for a copy from amazon.

As always Simonsen injects her subtle humor into the stories, especially as these stories include none other than that ridiculous oaf Mr. Collins!  It's these subtleties that always make me enjoy her writing.  She has a way of writing a more playful Darcy, and really who doesn't want to read how their relationship would play out with that kind of Darcy?

A new swoon worthy Mr. Darcy!

In A Walk in the Meadows at Rosings Park by Mary Lydon Simonsen, a new Mr. Darcy is presented and he is definitely swoon worthy. While Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth are visiting Rosings during the spring, Elizabeth catches Mr. Darcy's eye, but he is surprised that Elizabeth is the sister of Mr. Bingley's betrothed. He can hardly remember his horrible actions in Meryton, but Elizabeth is of course willing to remind him. With a walk in the meadows at Rosings Park, Mr. Darcy finds himself enchanted with Elizabeth and she finds herself receiving her first kiss from a man above her station in society. She retreats attempting to protect her heart from Mr. Darcy who she knows will not marry her. Finding himself taken with Elizabeth, he must find a way to convince her that their differences do not matter when they are in love. Darcy turns to his cousin Anne DeBourgh for advice in convincing Elizabeth to marry him. Not until he shows up at Longbourn to approve of her embarrassing family, does he surprise her with the most romantic of proposals.

This Mr. Darcy is different than what Austen had presented; however, this is not to say that this character portrayal comes unwanted. Void of pride and prejudice this Mr. Darcy becomes a embodiment of romance and pursuit of Elizabeth, despite their differences in spheres and her questionable family. This was an interesting look at how Darcy would behave without the angst and misapprehensions that the two classically create. What a fun variation on the characters and tale of Pride and Prejudice.

Simonsen gives her readers a bonus story with Mr. Darcy Steps In. Keeping with the same tone, this Mr. Darcy is along the same lines as A Walk in the Meadows at Rosings Park, and a good pairing of stories. Mr. Collins comes to Longbourn in search of a wife, but with Jane already being claimed by Mr. Bingley he naturally turns his intentions towards Elizabeth. Mr. Darcy is disturbed by the possibility of Elizabeth marrying a clergyman and steps in to sabotage the match and romance Elizabeth for himself. As in the first story I loved watching Mr. Darcy pursue Elizabeth and save her from the dreaded Mr. Collins.

A delightful, fun, and lighthearted read!

A Walk in the Meadows at Rosings Park is clever and humorous. From Mr. Collin's odious and unctuous personality to Mrs. Bennet's effusions and incivility, Simonsen's characterization is well developed. In addition, Darcy and Elizabeth's repartee is cleverly written portraying the couple's playfulness and wit. Simonsen's writing engages the reader's emotions. While there were a few scenes that summoned feelings of frustration and dejection for Darcy and Elizabeth, the primary feeling I felt was delight. The spark and connection between Darcy and Elizabeth is palpable. I love a book that will keep a smile on my face, and that is exactly what this book did.

The bonus short story included, Mr. Darcy Steps In, is a quick and enjoyable read as well.
This story is quite comedic. Mr. Darcy "steps in" in hopes of persuading Mr. Collins from proposing to Elizabeth. The reader gets to see a mischievous and cunning Mr. Darcy, the ever idiotic Mr. Collins, and the lively and impertinent Elizabeth. Let me not forget how delightful the scene is when Elizabeth and Darcy declare their love for each other!

This is the first variation I have read that seemed to correlate with a John Hughes movie. Darcy charms us from the very beginning and woos me and Elizabeth both. Both of these stories are excellent reads from an excellent writer!!

There is nothing in this book that promotes hard-knowledge.

If I go to w3schools website then I will learn something that has a universal value. This is pretty much a giant list of "you get what you make out of it".

Good coverage of global issues

This book has 14 chapters. It could be ideal for the MBA or undergraduate level course. Topics covered are the same as those from their competitors.

However, there were only four case studies on 1. Hong Kong Disneyland, 2. Nora-Sakari in Malaysia, 3. Western Union, and 4. The Tata Way. It will not be suited for the MBA course.

The book will be better if fewer chapters and more in-depth case studies are included.

About the Author
Margo Hayes began breeding Australian Lowline & Ausline cattle in 1996. She has exhibited over 50 Grand Championships at numerous shows as well as twice winning Grand Champion Carcase at the Royal Brisbane Show. A past President of the Lowline Cattle Association, and current President of the Ausline Cattle Association, Margo has judged cattle nationally and internationally.

Grassfed beef is the way to go.

The book is very helpful to "newbies" as well as "veterans" of the cattle business. We've just started with our Lowlines and they are wonderful. The book has helped us prioritize some things and getting the pastures in good condition is at the top of the list. With good pastures comes good beef.

Mrs. Hayes has written in terms that anyone can understand. The language is concise and the book is an enjoyable read. Understanding some of the Aussie terms she used was a fun challenge at times, but once I had them Americanized I had no problems understanding what she was talking about.

Thanks for a good solid book about Lowline facts and good pasture management.

Be aware that references to laws and regulations apply to Austria. Otherwise a good start for us novices. It is easy to read and will organized.

great read for the small land holder

As a first time small land owner researching small breeds in Australia, I found this book very useful. There are not many books for the Australian market online so this was one of the best references I have purchased
