Outstanding
By Sanjay Gupta
I picked up the Kindle edition of the book and it's as good as the paper edition, own the 1st edition in paper. Sometimes I note that folks complain about the Kindle edition in terms of accuracy. This Kindle edition is very readable. It's a must have for competitive analysis. It's not only for students but also for the professional. Have used it in M&A activities and in my day to to day job to better understand the industry, quality of supply chain and business model. From a structured perspective of performing the analysis, to the FAROUT method of evaluating the adequacy of tools, to the tools themselves this book demonstrates why it's truly an outstanding reference book. The book takes and improves on the venerable SWOT analysis, provides structure around an analysis of competing hypothesis to business model analysis, lynchpin analysis and much more. The take away for me is that the tools could be used in a CI or other role on a day to day basis. I certainly have.

The Best Book on Business and Competitive Analysis Techniques Got even Better --for Many Good Reasons
By Tibaut Houzanme
I have owned and used the very first edition of this material as a textbook in the Graduate Certificate of Competitive Intelligence program at Drexel University under the direction of Professor Kathy Shelfer (now at St. John University). It struck me then as *THE classic must-have* for every intelligence practitioner for three reasons, in my opinion: 1) It brought the most important business analysis, thinking, theory and practice together back to the basics and with a standardized entry for each tool; 2) it leveled the playing field for all the analysis techniques because it did not make any claim that one tool is superior to another, unlike other books that would seek to promote BCG, Win/Loss or whatever else I have consulted. Here, I do agree that the business problem/opportunity at hand should sponsor the analysis tool to be used, considering obtainable data and future orientation for action ; 3) it provided an independent and superior method for the user to identify the more applicable analysis tool based on specific action-oriented problem criteria (Future-oriented, Accurate, Resource-efficient, Objective, Useful, Timely = FAROUT). Indeed, the FAROUT method/chart that empowers a-n-y-o-n-e to select an appropriate analysis tool and move on to solving problems, is also easy to use.
Of course, when thinking and/or analysis become the common or distributed abilities among competitors (and humans), the winners are those that chose the best analytic framework and mindset to the appropriate race and avoid analysis paralysis. These three core principles, to my delight, have been maintained throughout the second edition and now the third.
Analysis tool application to problems, now, has a very low barrier for entry, and has further been improved to meet the current data-driven environment we live, collaborate and compete in --with specific case examples. As Business Intelligence and Data Analysis folks say, business-critical problem solving abilities come before charts, visualization and decision making. And I highly recommend this material for whomever needs to sharpen their thinking abilities to address important problems and opportunities.
While the book version is readily reachable on my desk, my kindle version follows me everywhere on my mobile.

If you do any sort of business or competitive analysis, buy this book.
By V. Lefevers
Full disclosure: I won a copy of this text at the 2015 SCIP Annual Conference, but honestly, I would have bought this if I hadn't won it. I initially used (and still have) the first edition in my CI classes during my MBA. Back then, I was struck with how thorough Craig and Babette were, not only providing frameworks and tools for a multitude of CI analyses, but also providing ways to assess those tools, which ensures you are asking (and answering) the best questions for your project.
This updated version improves upon the first, and expands it a bit. I've recommended this book not only to all my fellow intelligence workers, but also to all my colleagues who are involved in critical business decisions. I consider this my analysis holy grail; there is a framework in here for almost every situation. Half the fun of reading through it is the realization that it's really a "choose your own adventure" of intelligence and business analysis techniques, where you can take their concepts and really mold them to your situation. Kudos to the authors for a sophomore edition that beats the original.
