Eddy Krygiel, AIA, LEED AP is a practicing architect at BNIM Architects, which has four projects that have received AIA COTE Top Ten Green Project Awards. Eddy is responsible for implementing BIM at BNIM and also consults for other firms looking to implement BIM. He also teaches Revit to practicing architects and architectural students and has lectured around the nation on the use of BIM in the construction industry. Eddy has co-authored papers and books on BIM and sustainability as well as several books on using Autodesk Revit Architecture.

Bradley Nies, AIA, LEED AP, is a registered architect and Director of Elements, the sustainable design consulting division of BNIM Architects. Brad has worked on all levels of U.S. Green Building Council LEED-Certified projects, including two that achieved Platinum certification.

Best book integrating BIM and Sustainability

The best book for anyone wants to integrate BIM and Sustainability in their work practice, mainly designers.
Good for both students and professionals. a step by step procedure to achieve Green Design using BIM technology, with real life examples, procedures, calculations, etc...
The main program discussed is Autodesks's Revit, wish they used more than one application.

Excellent topic, but little practical content

I hesitate to give this book a negative review because I think the subject matter is extremely important. Both BIM and Sustainable Design are the future of architecture and there is still enormous potential to create synergies between the two, using the power of BIM to create more sustainable solutions.

However, I was personally disappointed by the actual content of this book and ended up returning it. Amazon was nice enough to refund it no questions asked, so I feel like I owe them some explanation. For me, there was very little new, practical information on how to actually integrate BIM and Sustainable Design.

The first section discusses the history of Sustainable Design (going back to the pyramids of Egypt) and answers basic questions like what is sustainable design, why is it important, what is LEED, etc. If you have no experience whatsoever with sustainable design, you might find this interesting. If you have even a moderate level of knowledge of sustainable design (as most architects today do) there is no new information here.

The second section discusses what BIM is, how it works, and why it is important. Again, if you have never heard of BIM this might be news to you. If you have already been working in BIM for even a couple of months, you will probably skip over this section, too.

Then there's a section on Integrated Design. It's an important topic and a growing field of interest in sustainable design, but there's no practical, hands-on information on how to use BIM in Integrated Design.

What little practical information on using BIM there is doesn't begin until about page 127 and it is disappointing. The main BIM program disussed (and practically the only one) is Revit and pretty much all of the strategies for using Revit for sustainable design I had already learned in the "Mastering Revit Architecture 2010" book by Greg Demchak, Tatjana Dzambazova, and Eddy Krygiel. There are instructions for how to change your geographic north to make accurate sun studies. There is discussion of how to calculate surface areas, how to export to energy modeling programs using gbXML, and how to track and calculate recycled content material volumes. All of this is explained even better in the Mastering Revit book, which also contains much more information on using Revit and costs less.

I hope that future editions of this book will contain more practical, innovative content, targeted at people actually using both BIM and sustainable design, who are already familiar with both of them.

I took the author's class through Boston Arch College. Good class, and the book gives good insights on how to parametrically design with sustainability in mind. Bravo.

Bravo!!

Abi is trying to recover from a breakdown after her twin sister, Lucy's death. It's not easy because she "sees" Lucy everywhere she goes. One day while sitting in a cafe - she sees "Lucy" again and decides to face her. Thank goodness for her sanity it's not Lucy, but someone named Beatrice. Abi takes Beatrice up on her offer and attends the art show she is having at her house. It's not long before Abi & Beatrice becomes fast friends.

Beatrice is so smitten with Abi - she asks her to move in with her. (Pause)

Reread the sentence above... I'll wait!!

I knew my husband for two years before he suggested we move in together. It took me two weeks to give him my decision.

So when Beatrice asked Abi to live with her - I screamed - "Abi, Think about it." Then I put myself in Abi's shoes. Abi lives alone - works as a freelance reporter (when she wants to take assignments) - and spend most of her days reliving the events that led up to Lucy's death. Also, Beatrice said Abi can live with her rent free. That's a great incentive to move in with friends.

Beatrice doesn't live alone. Living with her is her twin brother, Ben, and a few of Bea's artist friends. Beatrice does have one rule - No fraternizing with roommates. That doesn't stop the sparks from flying between Abi & Beatrice's brother, Ben.

Once Abi moves in the house - the "games" begin. Friends become enemies - enemies becomes friends. Does Beatrice know more about Abi than she is letting on? What secrets is Beatrice hiding? What secrets is Abi hiding? The two of them have more in common than they know?

The Sisters is a riveting psychological thriller that will send chills up your spine. The plot is well-written, the characters are flawed, and the twists and turns will have you questioning everything you thought you knew about these characters. The suspense was oozing from the pages. You won't know who to trust. I do have to mention that story takes place in Bath, so I enjoyed adding new words to my vocabulary.

A Twisty-Turny Thriller that Will Leave You Guessing

Abi is a twenty-nine year old woman living in Bath, England who is still reeling from the death of her twin sister Lucy. Losing a twin is hard enough without having to live with the knowledge that you are responsible for your twin's death. Abi's slogging through life, half alive, when she meets Bea and quickly gets swept into her world. Bea, an artist, who survives off the sales of her jewelry and a trust fund provided by her dead grandparents, seems to live a glamorous life in a giant Georgian mansion where she provides refuge for other artists like herself. But, upon moving into an empty bedroom in Bea's house, things soon begin to sour for Abi. Several letters from her sister go missing. Abi's convinced that someone has been in her room after she's left for town. And her friendship with Bea quickly deteriorates when she begins dating Bea's twin brother Ben. Is Abi in the midst of a mental breakdown or is something more sinister at play?
This book was compared to Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train and, at first, I didn't really see the comparison. But fifty or so pages in and you won't be able to put the book down. Told from alternating narratives, it can be difficult for the reader to determine who's telling the truth and who's unreliable. About halfway through the book I thought I had the ending figured out but I didn't even see it coming. Filled with twists and turns and doubt, on both the parts of the narration and the reader, this book is a true thriller that will leave readers guessing. My only complaint is that the title is a little misleading. The book appears to be about sisters, but really it's more of an exploration of the relationships between twins and the jealousy that transpires when those relationships are threatened.

Haunting and addictive

Gosh I read this fast – seriously once started there is no stopping so there’s a slight warning for you. Don’t try and fit “just a couple of chapters” in before you have to go somewhere.

The Sisters is a tense and very gripping psychological thriller, totally twisted in the best way possible – in this case rather than one protagonist you just can’t work out and who will drive you mad, you have two.

Abi has lost her twin and is a bit lost herself. Seeing Lucy everywhere she goes, she suffers a breakdown – we meet her later as she is trying to build a new life away from all the horror of her past – then she meets Bea. Free spirit Bea reminds Abi hauntingly of Lucy and is also a twin, they are drawn together. But everybody is hiding something and when Abi moves in with Bea, her brother, and their artistic set things start to get slightly odd.

This flowed from the page like the fastest running river you can imagine, as we jump between Abi and Bea and their thoughts and perceptions – but who is lying, who is truthful, is one of them mad, perhaps even both or is something else entirely going on? Who knows ( well me now obviously) but on the journey I had no clue – I just knew that I was caught up in the lives of these two girls, sympathetic and trusting first one then the other before bouncing back to “I have no clue” and clutching my head.

The narrative style is perfect for this type of tale – creeping up on you, bright sunshine and seemingly happy people but underneath it all a distinctly menacing feel – Claire Douglas builds the tension absolutely superbly, changing the game with almost every other chapter and keeping you firmly off kilter.

Add to that some extraordinarily fascinating characters, a really clever and intelligent plot, some perfect scene setting and a distinct tendency to sneak things up on you, this was a really terrific read. There are quite a few novels around this year that focus on siblings and family dynamic, this is one of the best I’ve read for sheer depth of perception and I really do highly recommend it.

About the Author

J.D. Vance grew up in the Rust Belt city of Middletown, Ohio, and the Appalachian town of Jackson, Kentucky. He enlisted in the Marine Corps after high school and served in Iraq. A graduate of the Ohio State University and Yale Law School, he has contributed to the National Review and is a principal at a leading Silicon Valley investment firm. Vance lives in San Francisco with his wife and two dogs.

An edifying and inspiring, if also troubling at times, read.

There is a lot to take in here, even for someone that's seen this life up close in many of its many guises.

While ostensibly about the particular culture of the West Virginia Scots-Irish underclass, anyone that has seen white poverty in America's flyover states will recognize much of what is written about here. It is a life on the very edge of plausibility, without the sense of extra-family community that serves as a stabilizing agent in many first-generation immigrant communities or communities of color. Drugs, crime, jail time, abusive interactions without any knowledge of other forms of interaction, children growing up in a wild mix of stoned mother care, foster care, and care by temporary "boyfriends," and in general, an image of life on the edge of survival where even the heroes are distinctly flawed for lack of knowledge and experience of any other way of living.

This is a story that many of the "upwardly mobile middle class" in the coastal areas, often so quick to judge the lifestyles and politics of "those people" in middle America, has no clue about. I speak from experience as someone that grew up in the heartland but has spent years in often elite circles on either coast.

Two things struck me most about this book.

First, the unflinching yet not judgmental portrayal of the circumstances and of the people involved. It is difficult to write on this subject without either glossing over the ugliness and making warm and fuzzy appeals to idealism and human nature, Hollywood style, or without on the other hand descending into attempts at political persuasion and calls to activism. This book manages to paint the picture, in deeply moving ways, without committing either sin, to my eye.

Second, the author's growing realization, fully present by the end of the work, that while individuals do not have total control over the shapes of their lives, their choices do in fact matter—that even if one can't direct one's life like a film, one does always have the at least the input into life that comes from being free to make choices, every day, and in every situation.

It is this latter point, combined with the general readability and writing skill in evidence here, that earns five stars from me. Despite appearances, I found this to be an inspiring book. I came away feeling empowered and edified, and almost wishing I'd become a Marine in my younger days as the author decided to do—something I've never thought or felt before.

I hate to fall into self-analysis and virtue-signaling behavior in a public review, but in this case I feel compelled to say that the author really did leave with me a renewed motivation to make more of my life every day, to respect and consider the choices that confront me much more carefully, and to seize moments of opportunity with aplomb when they present themselves. Given that a Hillbilly like the author can find his way and make good choices despite the obstacles he's encountered, many readers will find themselves stripped bare and exposed—undeniably ungrateful and just a bit self-absorbed for not making more of the hand we've been dealt every day.

I'm a big fan of edifying reads, and though given the subject matter one might imagine this book to be anything but, in fact this book left me significantly better than it found me in many ways. It also did much to renew my awareness of the differences that define us in this country, and of the many distinct kinds of suffering and heroism that exist.

Well worth your time.

An inside look at a world many of us know all too well....

I spent most of the last 2 days reading this book and I can't stop thinking about it. I never heard of the author until I saw him on Morning Joe a few days ago but I looked him up and read several articles he wrote for various publications so I bought his book. He grew up in a family of what he describes as "hillbillies" from Kentucky but spent most of his life in Ohio. His family identified as being strongly Christian even though their behavior was frequently not particularly Christian. He was mostly raised by his grandparents along with his half-sister because his mother was an addict who went from husband to husband and he barely knew his father. He did poorly in school and was only redeemed by the fact that a cousin pushed him into joining the Marines. From there he went to Ohio State and then to Yale Law School.

He writes very directly and honestly about the problems with white, working class America and why it is in decline. While part of the problem is societal, he believes there is an internal problem that government cannot do anything about. He suggests that tribalism, mistrust of outsiders and "elites," violence and irresponsibility among family members, parents without ethics and a sense of responsibility, terrible work ethics, and an us-against-them mentality is dooming the people who live that way to becoming poorer, more addicted, and more marginalized. Excellent book and very thought-provoking.

Shines honest light on often forgotten group.

Well written and heartfelt. I escaped inner city Baltimore (see The Wire) due to luck, the ability to do well in school and a few good teachers.Instead of trying to describe my early life to my family and friends, I will give them this book. Should be required high school reading. It seems that these days, the U.S. forgets that not all who live in poverty in the country are of color. Thank you, J.D.

This is the 2nd book in Kate Danley's Twilight Shifters series. The Dark of Twilight should definitely be read in first. By reading the books out of order you will miss much of the complex world and charactor building. It's a fast paced drama and when you come of the end on this installment it is like you had to bring yourself to a sudden stop or tumble head-first of a cliff.

If you like action, adventure

The second book is far darker than the first. Not usually one for graphic or violent content, I could not put this one down. None of the violence is gratuitous and all serves to advance the story. You may not want to read it in the dark, at night, when you are alone.Maybe. Or your cat might just freak you out when she jumps up on you to cuddle. Not that I would know of such things. Just sayin' it could happen. Maybe.

There is a bit of romance but as with many of Kate Danley's works, it is not the main feature. This isn't just a romance cloaked in a thinly veiled plot. If you like action, adventure, strong female characters who are actually likeable, and stories which showcase the variety and depth of human emotion and behavior, you will love this book.

Continuing the saga of the Twilight adventure. Our heroine must find the strength and courage to return to the most horrible and deadly place that rapidly turns worse than anyone expected. The swamp has more deadly surprises in store for anyone who is stupid enough to enter. Unfortunately, Aein and Lars and Finn are tasked to return to the swamp to protect the berry bush. No good deeds ever go unpunished.

Excellent & Much Needed

There are plenty of Self-Esteem books out there, but this one really handles the specifics of self-esteem issues. It is clearly written- even for a layperson. I am not in the field of psychology, but I found the book helpful in understanding how to deal with individuals in my own field. By understanding how and why certain individuals are affected by their own self esteem, I believe I can be more compassionate in my dealings with others in the workplace. Furthermore, I learned a few important things about myself and how I can approach success and failures in my own life. Highly recommended.

Sexy, lighthearted and fun!

A previous review of this edition stated that the first and last line of every page of text were missing. While I have no doubt that was true at the time, sometime in the last 18 months this appears to have been fixed and the text of this Kindle edition has no defects.

As for the book, if you like erotic Victorian tales where everyone eventually has coupled with everyone else by the end of the book, and the flowery euphemisms of the period are used to describe each body part and sex act, you should enjoy this farce. This was light reading of a tawdry nature in 1890, but today the antique language and tame sexual escapades give the book an amusing charm. At the same time, the book can be very "hot" in places, because the author's true appreciation for carnal pleasures -and familiarity with the subject matter- ring very true, even today.

James is the perfect troll master

This book is hilarious. James is the perfect troll master. Granted, not everybody thinks this stuff is hilarious. but I do.

I bought the book on a whim after reading portions of it online. While waiting for the delivery, I had moments of doubt "Is this book worth it? It wasn't even Amazon Prime-able. I had to pay shipping&handling." Then I got the book, and all those doubts faded away.

It's one of those books that are hilarious! But I read it slowly to treasure every email conversation. No need to rush through b/c we know how it will end. It's just a great book to have to read a couple troll-spam stories and really enjoy the moment.

The Good Cry Kind of Funny

Hilarious. We took a road trip to visit a friend and she gave this to us to read on our drive home. I tried my best to read it out loud, but there were a few times where I was laughing so hard I just had to take a break. I wish there were more (he mentions many interesting emails in the prologue that didn't make the book), but it was a genius idea and the perfect quick read. Honestly, I think reading it out loud made it even better.

Even in our internet age, there are some essential hard copy references that have a place on the diminishing bookshelves of most practising engineers and materials scientists. The distinctively yellow-bound Shell Bitumen Handbook, first published in 1949 and now issued in its sixth edition, is certainly one such valued book. It replaces the fifth edition of 2003 and is completely reorganised, thoroughly updated and expanded by around 50%. Three principal authors, led by civil engineer and expert asphalt consultant, Dr Robert Hunter, are supported by a panel of specialist authors, many of whom are with Shell Bitumen. Those familiar with the fifth edition will find the chapters rearranged somewhat, with a net increase in chapters from 20 to 24 and a doubling of appendices from 4 to 8. The new chapter sequence approximately follows the life of bitumen, from its origins and manufacture, through its properties and use in asphalts, then design, installation and performance of asphalt pavements, to durability and other applications for bitumen and asphalt. Two of the new appendices indicate an objective to make the handbook more international: Appendices 5 and 6, respectively, list bitumen and asphalt product standards across the world. In the former, different principles are used in various regions, with performance graded (PG) specification being used in North America and partly in China, whereas empirical testing is used elsewhere, such as penetration/softening in Europe, Africa and much of Asia, and viscosity in Australasia, the Indian subcontinent, Mexico and parts of South America (and for soft grades in Europe); unfortunately, there is some minor inconsistency between the text and the map in Appendix 5. A surprising omission from the previous edition was guidance on the design of asphalt mixtures. This gap is well and thoroughly addressed in the new edition, with a completely new, 50-page Chapter 12. In common with all the chapters in this book, Chapter 12 is clearly written and beautifully presented, being both easy and a pleasure to read, supported by full-colour diagrams of impressive clarity; there are no photographs in this particular chapter, but elsewhere there are plenty of good-quality images, as appropriate. This new chapter provides a grounding in the principles that underpin asphalt mix design, notably mixture volumetrics and aggregate grading , then explains the four most widely implemented design methods, all of which were developed in the USA: Hubbard Field , Hveem (or California ), Marshall (or Corps of Engineers , perhaps the best known) and Superpave (the most recent, resulting from a research programme initiated in response to increasing premature pavement failures). As well as reorganisation and the new chapter on asphalt mix design, existing users will be pleased to know that this new edition sets out to update the whole opus, and two splendid examples are the completely new Chapter 7 on rheology of bitumens and the extended Chapter 8 (formerly Chapter 5) on polymer-modified bitumens and other modified binders. The former is a most valuable 30-page addition on a critical property, especially with the growth in the use of polymer-modified bitumens, authored jointly by specialists from Shell (Dr Richard Taylor) and the University of Nottingham (Professor Gordon Airey).
