Of Once And Future Goddesses

As a recently-published author, I would like to express my admiration for the work of Barbara G. Walker. Of all the sources that I quoted from my bibliography, Walker was by far the most significant. The Woman's Encyclopedia is the most valuable book in my collection, and it represents a superhuman piece of research. The suppression of the Feminine and the patriarchal re-writing of history can be traced through innumerable references - from Christianity's assimilation of pagan rituals and festivals to the creation of the mythology of feminine evil. Walker, like Jungian analyst June Singer, believes that patriarchal religion is the basis for the suppression of women. The case she builds is frankly unassailable. After reading this classic study, one cannot fail to see the transforming power of the Mother Goddess in everything from A Midsummer Night's Dream and Finnegans Wake to Mary Poppins and The Matrix. Barbara Walker is a modern-day Wisewoman, and we can never have enough of those. In a sterile, left-brain, hunter-killer psytocracy, Walker's books shine like a beacon for those who still have the strength to dream.

reclaiming history

This encyclopedia documents the subversion of global matriarchal cultures. It is immaculately well-referenced, much more so than the contrived versions of history that have been force-fed to us. There are relatively few works of scholarship that have the power to elicit such emotional reactions and defensiveness from the most privileged among us. You'll never look at fingers, menstrual blood, or religion the same way again.

Fascinating and useful!

This encyclopedia is so absorbing I got utterly lost in it for hours and hours. Finally someone has seen through the patriarchal smokescreen and exposed the hypocrisy and lies. Many times I found myself laughing out loud at some of her caustically humorous observations. I'm sure this must be on the Pope's list of books forbidden from the eyes of all good Catholics...Blessed Be!

Calling his book a "field guide to ecology," Kricher introduces basic ecological concepts and describes notable field marks that define a particular environment. Twenty-seven types of forest communities east of the Rockies are described in terms of their characteristic indicator species. Illustrative plates, many of which are in color, accompany these descriptions. Seasonal processes within the forest are also discussed. This book, when used in conjunction with appropriate field guides, is an excellent introduction for the amateur naturalist who wants to see the forest as a whole. Recommended. Introducing the Eastern Forest

The purpose of this guide is not to assist one in identifying species of flora and fauna found in the Eastern Forest--such a tome would be monumental in size--but rather to instill in the reader an understanding of the forest's general dynamics. The book is divided into eight sections; they are:
1) How to use this book
2) Forest field marks
3) Eastern forest communities
4) Disturbance and pioneer plants
5) Adaptation
6) Paterns of spring
7) Nature in summer
8) Autumn and winter
This book is an excellent beginning point for those who want to develope a better understanding of forest ecology. I highly recommend it.

How things really work

Though this guide and its companion Western forest edition have been in print for over a decade, I only stumbled on it last year. It concisely provides the missing links between other field guides to plants, fungi, insects, spiders, reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals, tracks, fossils ... you get the drift. As a hiker, bird-watcher or -feeder, observer, photographer or amateur naturalist, the first step is usually simple identification of species. (With summer warblers, of course, the first step is actually seeing the bird in question.) In the same way that traditional field guides provide portable I.D. info, the ECOLOGY version helps you understand the change you see as you hike down out of a Beech-Maple forest into an Oak-Hickory stand, or the subtle differences when a Northern Riverine Forest segues into a Northern Swamp. By no means comprehensive (remember this fits in your pocket), this book, like the science of ecology itself, is composed of seemingly endless delightful digressions. Where do galls come from? How do dragonflies mate? Have you ever bothered to learn frog calls? What can the vegetation in an old field tell you about history? This volume (and by my inference the Western companion) are an excellent and fascinating addition to any field guide collection.

About the Author
Terryl Whitlatch is an accomplished, scientifically and academically trained illustrator who extensively studied vertebrate zoology and animal anatomy. She has worked for various zoos and museums in the United States and as senior consultant on Wildlife Art and Animal Anatomy for the World Wildlife Fund. She is considered to be one of the top creature designers and animal anatomists working in the field today. In a career spanning more than 25 years, Whitlatch has many projects to her credit, including Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: The Special Edition, Jumanji, Men in Black, Brother Bear, Dragonheart, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Curious George, The Polar Express, and Beowulf. For over seven years, she worked for Lucasfilm, Industrial Light & Magic, and George Lucas’s JAK Films. Her illustration skills and comprehensive knowledge of animal anatomy and movement are essential in the development of believable creature creation.

The importance of anatomy knowledge for drawing and creating

After reading her books, Terryl Whitlach became one of my professional raw-models. Through this 3 book collection (I only bought this one and "Principles of creature design"), she shows you her work and process, as well as her "rules" to achieve a realistic believable creature. Don't expect a detailed drawing tutorial because it is not that. It is more like a very complete portfolio with very useful advises from the author. You will find some examples of animals and their full anatomy.
The printing quality of this book is remarkable; one can truly appreciate her art in detail. The binding is very good as well.
The author's writing is brief and clear.
If you are into animal anatomy drawing and/or character concept design... well, you must have Whitlach's work in hand. You will find this book useful and nurturing.

Great Paleo-Reconstruction text

Amazing book for animal anatomy and one of the only text I have found on Paleo-Reconstruction. Really gets to the bottom on how to draw from skeleton, to adding muscles and finally adding the skin and fur. I can't say enough about this book. Thank you Terryl for putting this resource in one concise volume. The book I have been looking for, for quiet sometime. A++++ Buy this book if drawing animals is your thing!

A tour-de-force

This artist is among the greatest animal illustrators of this or any other century. Her latest work is no exception. As a fantasy/wildlife artist myself, I can't imagine a more awe-inspiring, supremely helpful and just plain mesmerizing series of books. The price may seem high, but is in fact very affordable considering the value of the investment. I plan to continue purchasing everything she produces as long as she maintains this quality, and will most likely purchase separate copies for my artistic daughter as well. I would place this item in the same class as Gurney's Dinotopia and other works, and that is high praise indeed. Kudos, Ms. Whitlatch.

AYSE BIRSEL has been designing award-winning products for over twenty years. Its a must have in my creative life toolbox!

I can't find the words to express how life changing this book has been. It made me realize that you can apply the same rules of design into about just everything in your life. Commit 15 minutes in the morning with this book daily start seeing your life as a metaphor, you will be asked to chisel away until you get the core of what makes you HAPPY. You'll use that information as a tool to sketch out what a life like that might look like. Manifestos, to-do lists, venn diagrams, oh my!!! - your life in doodles. Its FUN, its CREATIVE and its a great tool for GROWTH. Don't worry no hardcore drawing skills needed, promise.

This is a great book. I've been reading performance psychology books for years. This is a refreshing new idea in a subject area that is pretty diverse. Ayse takes you through a design process commonly used by product designers in order to help you visualize the structure of your life currently and where you want to take it. Most people that have read anything in this genre know about goal setting and such but this book takes you through the process of analysis using visual cues vice just lists of things to do. The exercises and concepts in this book are well worth your hard earned dollars. I hope she continues to develop this process and write more about it in the future.

What I like the most about this book is its simplicity - it doesn't pretend to have all the answers but is full of right-brain and visualization exercises to jump start your creativity. If you're looking for a concrete, linear step-by-step guide on how to fix your career then this book may not be for you. If you're open-minded about change and deconstructing your life/goals/whatever else is going on, then this book is definitely worth a try.

Selfish No More

I live it is crazy how often we can get cough up in our own life's and forget to think about others. Maybe a little brother or friend in need. We really need to put yourself in other peoples shoes more often and think what would we want if we where them. This book will shed some incite on selfishness and provide some good advice and different ways you can improve your character and become a better person! I recommend this book to everyone because improving yourself in positive way can be life changing.

This book is pretty helpful - I know someone who struggles with selfishness (actually we all do to some degree), so this book really helped me understand the causes and effects of selfishness. In the book different topics are covered like how to deal with selfishness, looking deep inside yourself to uncover selfishness, how to stop being selfish, etc. Overall, I’d recommend reading this to anyone who needs to deal with it or who knows someone who struggles with selfishness.

Thrown out of Mashriq for trying to bring up his son as a Muslim, he next stops in Haira, a land whose bloody king is worshiped as God. Ibn Fattouma escapes imprisonment for Halba, where all religions are welcomed and Muslim homosexuals peacefully demonstrate for gay rights. There he marries a Muslim female pediatrician who teaches him the value of an Islam "of independent judgment." Next the hero visits Aman, a communist state with full employment but no personal freedoms. He never reaches his ultimate goal, Gebel, land of perfection. Fattouma is disappointed in love, so he sets out seeking comfort in wisdom. His goal is the fabled land of Gebel, from which no one has ever returned. First, though, his caravan must pass through five other countries, each distinct in governance and religion, and each delaying Ibn for years. Mashriq is despotic, peopled by naked slaves, and here Ibn falls in love with Arousa and starts a family. War separates them, and he pursues her through Haira, a theocratic police state; Halba, the land of freedom; and Communist Aman. Finally, from Ghuroub, where only reason is worshipped, he leaves to enter Gebel, his journey toward perfection almost complete. This novel is Mahfouz's most purely polemical work, directly engaging the issues of religion and politics that have been the strong subtexts of his previous fiction. Nobelist Mahfouz offers here a slender, magical parable of idealism and compromise through a stylized Middle East odyssey, first published in Arabic in 1983. Thwarted in marriage when his fianc‚e is claimed by the sultan's chamberlain, Qindil Muhammad al-Innabi, called Ibn Fattouma, resolves to go on a pilgrimage to the storied land of Gebel. The tale of his travels is a tale of detours. Passing through the moon-worshipping land of Mashriq, he stays for several years with lightsome Arousa, but is exiled for sharing his Muslim religion with their children. When Haira, a police state where Fattouma has been staying, conquers Mashriq, he purchases Arousa in a slave auction, but again his bride catches the eye of an influential advisor, and he is sentenced to life imprisonment for speaking out against the advisor. Released after 20 years by another war, he travels to Halba--a land of complete freedom that seems a sly portrait of America--and takes another wife; the reappearance of Arousa, though, reproaches him with his inconstancy to his pilgrimage, and he sets out for Aman, the land of perfect justice whose price is total conformity. Increasingly disillusioned in his nation's betrayal of Muslim beliefs, Fattouma follows Arousa to Ghuroub, where he attaches himself to a holy man who tries to prepare him for the journey to Gebel, but more fighting forces him to press on prematurely, and it is unclear from the ending of his journal whether he ever reaches his elusive goal. What is clear is the simple charm with which Mahfouz dramatizes fundamental questions about tolerance, love, and mortality while condensing a lifetime's worth of experience into 160 pages. Mahfouz is widely considered the most Western of contemporary Arab novelists, but the closest Western analogue here--Pilgrim's Progress starring Sinbad the Sailor--only reinforces the distance between East and West. In search of perfection by a great writer

The Journey of Ibn Fattouma is an imaginary hourny in search of an imaginary perfect political, social and religious system that we all dream of. Even with a great imagination like Mahfouz he can't even get close to the Utopia he is looking for.
He encountered war and injustice everywhere he went. At the Land of Ghoroub which is similar to (Buddhism)her realised that all imperfection resides in the essence of every human being that shows outwardly in our daily conduct with others and consequently breeds hatered, wars and injustice. Meditation or turning our conscious inwardly enables us to discover our pure ellement and become enlightend. Our outer world depends mainly on our inner realization of our oneness with everything and everyone else, and we don't have to go anywhere to in search of Utopia.
The Land of Gebel is the ultimate goal or Salvation. It is upward passage, individual, without any companion or guidance of any kind except your inner light. Anyone could reach salvation like Ibn Fattouma's wife who was from a primitive land, pagan and uneducated only through suffering.
The book is simble, easy read, lucid style and a prove that "simplicity is the seal of truth", therfore I recommend it and deservs five stars.
